The Sacrament of Baptism

"The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist. The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters." As St. Gregory Nazianzen says, "He comes to sanctify the Jordan for our sake... to begin a new creation through the Spirit and water." From United States Catholic Catechism for Adult, 184."Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word." From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213.
