The Sacraments of the Church

Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven:

•  Baptism
•  Confirmation (Chrismation)
•  The Eucharist
•  Penance
•  The Anointing of the Sick
•  Holy Orders
•  Matrimony

The Sacrament of Baptism

"The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist. The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters." As St. Gregory Nazianzen says, "He comes to sanctify the Jordan for our sake... to begin a new creation through the Spirit and water." From United States Catholic Catechism for Adult, 184.
